DemBiz Welcomes James Parrish, Executive Director of Equality Virginia
James Parrish is the executive director of Equality Virginia (EV), the leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Virginians in the state. EV's work includes research, voter education, and outreach on a broad range of issues affecting LGBT Virginians. A lifelong Virginian, James began volunteering as a fundraiser and organizer with EV and the Commonwealth Coalition in 2006 to defeat the Marshall Newman marriage amendment. Following that campaign, he coordinated EV's Lobby Day programs and finally joined the EV staff at the start of 2009 to manage its workplace non-discrimination program. He has served as executive director since January 2011.
Under James' guidance, EV has made enormous strides by engaging the business community of Virginia. The Equality Means Business program boasts over 750 small, locally-owned businesses across Virginia that have pledged not to discriminate against LGBT employees and customers. Virginia Compete is a program comprised of corporations with a footprint in VA who understand that LGBT inclusion makes good business; each member signs a public statement of support of policies that welcome and protect LGBT employees. EV has long enjoyed the support of the corporate community, particularly through EV's annual Commonwealth Dinner, which funds about a third of EV's work. This year EV's supporters will enjoy attending the Dinner on April 14th alongside Governor Ralph Northam and other elected officials, in addition to many employees of corporate sponsors like Altria and Weinstein Properties.
