About Congressman Don Beyer
Congressman Don Beyer is currently serving his fifth term as the U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 8th District, which includes Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and parts of Fairfax County. He is a member of Congress’ Joint Economic Committee and also serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means.
Prior to his current role, Congressman Beyer served as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1998. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was a strong advocate for Virginians with disabilities and worked to ensure protections for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable populations during welfare reform in the mid-1990s. He was the Democratic nominee for governor in 1997.
After leaving the Lieutenant Governor’s office, Congressman Beyer dedicated fourteen years to serving as Chair of Jobs for Virginia Graduates, a highly successful high school dropout prevention program. He also spent a decade on the board of the D.C. Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. As Chair of the Virginia Economic Recovery Commission, he helped pass permanent pro-business reforms and was a co-founder of the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
In 2009, President Obama nominated Congressman Beyer to serve as Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. In this role, he advocated for stricter sanctions to compel Iran to begin nuclear disarmament discussions and was integral to U.S. Department of Justice efforts to halt the abuses of Swiss bank secrecy by wealthy Americans.
Before his distinguished career in public service, Rep. Beyer spent four decades building his family business in Northern Virginia, starting with a summer job at a car dealership in 1974. He is a graduate of Williams College and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, and was named a Presidential Scholar by President Lyndon Johnson.
Congressman Beyer has four children and two grandchildren. He and his wife Megan reside in Alexandria, Virginia.
